Research & Knowledge Exchange
Connecting Community Knowledge with Practical Rural Development Research
Sustainable Rural Initiatives uses research, community participation and partnerships to generate practical knowledge for rural development, education, design, agriculture, youth engagement, health and sustainable livelihoods in Okana and beyond.
About Our Research
Research grounded in community realities
Our research is action-oriented. We work with community members, students, academic partners and local institutions to understand challenges and design practical solutions.
Learning from Okana, designing for impact
SRI’s research and knowledge exchange work is rooted in the belief that rural communities are not just beneficiaries of development, but active producers of knowledge, innovation and solutions.
Through collaborations with universities, researchers, students and local community members, SRI documents learning from projects in education, skills development, agriculture, environment, community health, ICT, youth engagement and rural infrastructure.
The goal is to transform field experience into practical knowledge that can inform better programmes, stronger partnerships and evidence-based community development.
Our approach combines local knowledge, participatory research, co-design, learning-by-doing and long-term community engagement.
Research Areas
What we study and document
Our research areas reflect SRI’s practical work across rural development, youth engagement, education, infrastructure and sustainability.
Education & Playful Learning
Exploring creative learning models, maker education, children’s design programmes and learning continuity in rural settings.
Skills Development & Livelihoods
Documenting practical training in tailoring, carpentry, ICT and vocational pathways for community empowerment.
Agriculture & Environment
Studying sustainable farming, permaculture, tree nurseries, rainwater collection and environmental resilience.
Digital Inclusion & ICT
Understanding how community ICT facilities can improve access to learning, information and digital opportunities.
Community Health & SRHR
Generating knowledge on youth access to sexual and reproductive health information, services and advocacy.
Youth, Sports & Equality
Exploring how sport can promote participation, leadership, talent development and equality among rural youth.
Community Infrastructure
Researching how resource centres, libraries, meeting spaces and community facilities support rural transformation.
Youth Advocacy & Policy
Documenting meaningful youth engagement, advocacy and participation in policy-making processes.
Community Knowledge
Valuing local experience as evidence
SRI believes that local people hold deep knowledge about their environment, challenges, traditions, livelihoods and aspirations. Our work creates space for this knowledge to be documented, respected and shared.
Community knowledge helps shape project design, research questions, training activities and implementation strategies.
- Participatory conversations: Listening to community priorities before designing interventions.
- Co-design sessions: Working with residents, youth and partners to create practical solutions.
- Local documentation: Capturing stories, practices, challenges and lessons from the field.
- Feedback loops: Returning findings to the community for validation and improvement.

Knowledge Exchange
Sharing knowledge beyond research reports
Knowledge exchange is about making research useful. SRI shares learning through community meetings, workshops, student collaborations, exhibitions, reports, digital storytelling and practical training.
We aim to ensure that knowledge flows both ways: from community to researchers, and from research back to the community.
Workshops
Community learning sessions, training events and reflection forums.
Field Labs
Practical experimentation with farming, design, ICT and skills training.
Reports & Briefs
Accessible documentation for partners, funders and institutions.
Storytelling
Sharing community stories, case studies, photo essays and blog updates.
