Our Story

Sustainable Rural Initiatives (SRI) was established in 2013, as a visionary non-governmental organization driven by the goal to positively transform the livelihoods of rural communities.

Since then SRI has focused its activities in Okana community and the wider Nyando region of Kisumu County of Western Kenya. SRI works with community stakeholders especially youths, women and children to develop capacities and potentials into life changing possibilities.

Our Theory of Change

We have adopted an integrated approach to community transformation and development focusing on five program areas that together are crucial for community development. These include:

Agriculture & Environment

Sustainable practices are central to our work.

Skills Development

Most rural youths and women lack employable skills.

Community Health

Okana Community faces several health challenges.

Youth in Action

Sustainable societies that invest in young people and children.

Education Support

Education as the most important tool for transforming societies.

Through these focus areas, we are thus committed to creating a brighter future and meaningful change for underserved rural societies. We leverage our collective talents, resources, knowledge, capacities and networks to encourage societal transformations. We thus implement activities by inbuilding local and sustainable innovations that also promote conservation, use of local materials and sustainability.

We work in collaboration with local community organizations, and with local and international partners with a focus on use of appropriate knowledge exchanges, innovations and partnerships to transform rural societies.

Our Vision is a sustainable world with new possibilities and opportunities arising from local initiatives, potential, partnerships, and knowledge application.

Our Mission is to transform rural communities to enable them have better livelihoods and solve their chronic and pressing challenges.

Motto: Together for better!

Core Values: Inclusivity; Innovation; Transparency and Accountability; Partnerships; and Teamwork.
